Glem Gas: an Italian cooking-appliance maker

gas cooker with oven — illustrative photo

Glem Gas was founded in 1959 in Modena, Italy, and its plant is in San Cesario sul Panaro. Its core business is cooking appliances: free-standing cookers, built-in ovens and hobs, and hoods, and the Middle East is one of its main markets. Some models sold in Egypt are labelled made in Italy.

The model is printed on a label on the oven drawer edge or inside the door, under the hob, or inside the hood behind the filter, in a format like NE9612RIFSG or GHP980IX. Photograph it, and say whether the appliance runs on a cylinder or mains gas.

Glem Gas cookers repair

Book a technician

In Egypt you will find 5-burner, 90 cm models such as the NE9612RIFSG with self-ignition, safety and a grill. The gas oven lights differently from the hob burners, which explains many complaints that the oven will not stay lit.

Lighting the oven, from the manual

Open the oven door fully first. Then press the oven knob and turn it to maximum, keep pressing until it lights, and hold for about 10 seconds after it lights. If it does not light within 15 seconds, release the knob, leave the door open and wait at least a minute before trying again, so the gathered gas can clear. Check the steps against your model's manual.

If you smell gas: close the valve or cylinder, open the windows, do not switch any electrical switch on or off or use a lighter, leave the place and call the gas emergency line 129, and do not use the cooker until a technician has checked the connections. The cooling fan that starts a few minutes after the oven is switched on is normal.

Common cooker faults4

The flame goes out when you let go

Moderate

On the hob or oven: it lights while you press and goes out once you let go.

Possible causes

  • Not holding long enough
  • A dirty thermocouple or one out of the flame
  • The thermocouple or safety valve

Solution: Keep the knob pressed after lighting as described above, so the thermocouple has time to heat up. Clean the thermocouple tip and seat the cap. If it still goes out, the thermocouple or safety valve needs checking.

Ignition not working

Easy

No spark, or clicking without lighting.

Possible causes

  • The cooker is not plugged in
  • A wet or greasy electrode
  • The ignition unit

Solution: Dry and clean the electrode, and check the plug. If there is no spark anywhere, the ignition unit needs checking.

Yellow or lifting flames

Moderate

Yellow flames that blacken pans, or flames lifting off the burner.

Possible causes

  • Injectors not matched to the gas type
  • Gas pressure
  • Blocked holes

Solution: Clean the burner holes with a dry brush and seat the caps properly. A yellow flame means incomplete combustion, so keep the kitchen ventilated until it is fixed. If the cooker moved from a cylinder to mains gas or the reverse, the injectors must be changed, which is a technician's job.

The grill or oven does not heat well

Moderate

Food cooks slowly or on one side.

Possible causes

  • The oven thermostat
  • A blocked oven burner
  • The door seal

Solution: This needs inspection. First check the door closes properly.

Glem Gas ovens repair

Book a technician

The built-in ovens include gas models such as the 95-litre GF9W31IXN with gas grill and fan, and multifunction electric models. The difference matters: gas oven faults are in the burner and thermocouple, electric ones in the elements, clock and thermostat.

The clock first

After any power cut, the manual says the clock settings are erased and the display flashes 0.00. Set the clock by pressing SET with + and −. On some models the panel locks itself after a few seconds and wakes when any key is held for two seconds.

A built-in oven should only be pulled out of its cabinet by a technician, because of the connections and ventilation. Photograph the label on the door frame when the door is open.

Clock flashing 0.00 and the oven will not work

Easy

After a power cut, the display flashes and the oven does not heat.

Possible causes

  • The clock needs setting
  • An automatic programme left on the panel

Solution: Set the clock and cancel any delayed programme. If it still does not heat, the fault is in the oven itself.

Electric oven not heating or heating on one side

Moderate

Food does not cook, or burns underneath while raw on top.

Possible causes

  • The top, bottom or fan-ring element
  • The thermostat
  • The thermal fuse

Solution: Each element is measured on its own, which identifies the part.

The gas oven burner goes out

Moderate

It lights, then goes out after you let go or after a few minutes.

Possible causes

  • Not holding long enough after lighting
  • The oven thermocouple
  • The thermostat

Solution: Light it with the door open and keep the knob pressed for about 10 seconds after it lights; if it does not light, release the knob and wait a minute before trying again. If it still goes out, the thermocouple needs checking.

Fan not working or noisy

Moderate

The oven fan or cooling fan is silent or squeals.

Possible causes

  • The fan motor
  • Grease on the blade

Solution: The cooling fan protects the controls from heat; if it has stopped, do not run the oven for long periods until it is repaired.

Glem Gas hoods repair

Book a technician

Models include the GHP980IX, a 90 cm pyramid hood with 770 m³/h extraction, 3 speeds and two carbon filters. Most weak-extraction complaints come from filters that need cleaning or replacing, not the motor.

Filters before the motor

The GHB990IXA manual says to wash the metal grease filter every two months with mild detergent or in a dishwasher at low temperature. The carbon filter cannot be washed and is replaced every four months at most. Other models ask for a monthly wash, so check your hood's manual.

If the hood vents outside through a duct, check the duct is not kinked or blocked at the window end. Switch off the power before removing any filter.

Common hood faults4

Weak extraction

Easy

Steam and smells linger even at top speed.

Possible causes

  • A clogged grease filter
  • A spent carbon filter
  • A kinked or blocked exhaust duct
  • The motor capacitor

Solution: Wash the grease filter and replace the carbon. If the motor still turns slowly afterwards, the capacitor is measured.

Loud noise or vibration

Moderate

Humming or knocking from inside the hood.

Possible causes

  • A filter not seated
  • A greasy or loose fan blade
  • Motor bearings

Solution: Refit the filters properly. If the noise continues, the blade and motor need taking apart.

Lights or buttons not working

Easy

The hood does not respond, or runs with the light off.

Possible causes

  • The bulb
  • The button panel
  • The plug or power

Solution: Check the plug, and change the bulb with the power off once it has cooled. If none of the buttons respond, the panel needs checking.

Grease or water dripping from the hood

Easy

Drops onto the cooker from under the hood.

Possible causes

  • A saturated grease filter
  • Steam condensing in a cold exhaust duct

Solution: Clean the filter, and switch the hood on a few minutes before cooking so the duct warms up.

Glem Gas built-in hobs repair

Book a technician

The built-in hobs are sold in Egypt in 90 cm 5-burner and 60 cm 4-burner sizes, with one-hand ignition and safety on every burner, and models such as the GT955HIX have a triple-ring wok burner.

The correct way to light

As on a cooker hob: press the knob and turn it to maximum until it lights, then keep it pressed for about 10 seconds so the flame safety engages. If it does not light, release the knob and wait a minute before trying again.

The hob is set into the worktop with the gas connection underneath, so do not remove it yourself. If you smell gas under the worktop: close the valve, open the windows, do not switch any electrical switch on or off or use a lighter, leave the place and call the gas emergency line 129, and do not use the hob until a technician has checked the connection.

Common hob faults3

A burner goes out when you let go

Moderate

It lights while you press and goes out once you let go.

Possible causes

  • Letting go too soon
  • A dirty thermocouple
  • The thermocouple or its safety valve

Solution: Hold the knob longer and clean the thermocouple tip. If it still goes out, the thermocouple may be faulty and needs a technician.

One-hand ignition not working

Easy

You press the knob and there is no spark, or clicking continues.

Possible causes

  • A dirty or wet electrode
  • Water under the knobs
  • The ignition unit or its supply

Solution: Clean and dry the electrode, and let the hob dry if water got under the knobs. If there is no spark at all, it is the ignition unit.

The wok burner burns unevenly

Easy

Only one ring lights or the flame is patchy.

Possible causes

  • The inner caps out of place
  • Blocked holes

Solution: Remove the caps, clean the holes and refit them in the right order.

Features that affect faults

These features come from user manuals and model pages, and not every model has all of them.

  • Flame failure on every burner and the oven

    Cookers and hobs

A thermocouple beside each burner is heated by the flame and keeps the gas valve open; if the flame is blown out or put out by a boil-over, the valve shuts off the gas by itself.

    Common faults

That is why a burner goes out if you let go of the knob before the thermocouple heats up. If only one burner goes out, the fault is usually its own thermocouple; if they all do, start with the gas supply: the cylinder, regulator or valve.

  • Triple-ring wok burner

    Hobs such as GT955HIX

A large burner with three rows of flame, rated 3.8 kW on the GT955HIX.

    Common faults

If only one ring lights or the flame is patchy, the cap is not seated or the holes are blocked.

  • Oven clock and timer

Cookers and ovens with a display

An electronic programmer with the clock, cooking time and end time; the oven switches itself off when the time you set runs out.

    Common faults

If the oven switches off before the food is done, first check whether a cooking time is set on the panel; when it runs out the oven switches off, which is not a fault.

  • Hood filters

    Hoods such as GHP980IX

A metal grease filter that is washed, and a carbon odour filter that is replaced, not washed.

    Common faults

A carbon filter left in a hood that vents outside cuts extraction for no benefit: carbon is only needed when the hood recirculates air into the kitchen.

Questions about Glem Gas repairs

Is Agent Site Glem Gas customer service?
No. We are a repair company that services Glem Gas and other brands, and we are not affiliated with Glem Gas or any of its distributors in Egypt.
Can I convert a Glem Gas cooker from a cylinder to mains gas?
Yes. The manual explains that conversion is done by changing the burner injectors and adjusting the minimum flame, which must be done by a technician and then leak-tested.
The clock flashes 0.00 and the oven will not work
That happens after a power cut, and an electric oven may not heat until the clock is set; the steps are in the ovens section above. If it still does not heat after setting it, there is a fault to inspect.
Can Glem Gas parts be found?
Common parts such as thermocouples, spark plugs and injectors come in standard sizes. Model-specific parts such as the thermostat and timer are identified from the label, and the technician tells you what is available before starting.
