Common Refrigerator Faults

Before you call, find your fault below: likely causes, safe checks you can do yourself, and when you need a technician.

Refrigerator not cooling

Medium Fridge running but not cooling or freezing? The 6 most common causes and the checks to do before you call a technician on 16062.

If the compressor is running but the food is warm, the usual causes are a dust-clogged condenser, low refrigerant from a leak, or a stopped evaporator fan in the freezer. Start with the safe checks below, and move sensitive food somewhere cold until the problem is fixed.

Symptoms

  • Food is warm even though the compressor is running
  • The compressor runs all the time without stopping
  • The freezer is cold but the fridge section is not
  • The compressor is louder than usual
  • The electricity bill has jumped suddenly

Likely causes

  1. A heavily dust-clogged condenser, so heat is not released properly
  2. Low refrigerant from a small leak
  3. A failed evaporator fan in the freezer
  4. An old compressor that has lost efficiency
  5. A temperature sensor (thermistor) giving wrong readings
  6. A worn door gasket letting cold air escape

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Clean the condenser Unplug the fridge first, ease it away from the wall, and brush the dust off the condenser coil (at the back or underneath, depending on the model) with a soft brush. This often solves the problem when dust is the cause.
  2. Test the door seal Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket is worn and letting cold air escape.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Loud clicking from the compressor
  • Oily residue on the pipes or joints at the back = a possible refrigerant leak: air the room, keep flames and anything that sparks away (R600a refrigerant is flammable), and unplug the fridge
  • You cleaned the condenser and the problem is still there
  • A burning plastic smell

Refrigerator freezing food on shelves

Medium Food freezing in the fridge even on a normal setting? The usual cause is the thermostat or the temperature sensor.

Vegetables freezing on the top shelf? The setting is usually too cold or the thermostat has failed. Start by setting the fridge to 4-5°C. If the problem continues, the temperature sensor (thermistor) or the air damper may be faulty.

Symptoms

  • Vegetables and fruit are freezing
  • There is ice in the milk
  • Ice is forming on the inside walls
  • Food near the air vents is frozen solid

Likely causes

  1. A failed thermostat keeping the cooling on all the time
  2. A temperature sensor (thermistor) giving wrong readings
  3. An air damper stuck open
  4. The setting is too cold (1-2°C)
  5. A control board fault
  6. The fridge is almost empty, so the temperature swings

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Adjust the settings On models with a display, set the fridge to 4°C and the freezer to -18°C. On older models, set the thermostat dial to the middle.
  2. Spread the food out Keep food away from the cold-air vents. If the fridge is nearly empty, add a few bottles of water to keep the temperature steady.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Food still freezes after you adjust the settings
  • An error code appears after the adjustment
  • Unusual ice build-up on the inside walls

Refrigerator leaking water

Simple Water on the floor or in the drawers? The usual cause is a clogged internal drain. Here are the checks.

The two main causes of a leaking fridge: a clogged internal drain (defrost water cannot reach the drain pan underneath), or a worn door gasket. Both are usually simple to fix.

Symptoms

  • Water on the floor around the fridge
  • Water inside the vegetable drawers
  • Ice collecting at the bottom of the freezer
  • A patch of damp that never dries under the fridge
  • Water dripping from the ice maker

Likely causes

  1. A drain hose blocked by food debris or ice
  2. The drain pan underneath is full or cracked
  3. A worn door gasket lets warm air in, which condenses
  4. A faulty water inlet valve (ice-maker models)
  5. A badly fitted or damaged water filter
  6. A cracked ice-maker water line

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Empty the drain pan Unplug the fridge first (and if water has reached the socket, switch off the breaker before touching the plug). The drain pan sits under the fridge, at the front or at the back next to the compressor depending on the model — if it comes out without tools, slide it out gently, empty it and clean it. Careful: the compressor can be hot.
  2. Check the water line If your fridge has an ice maker, check the water line (copper or plastic) at the back. Any crack means a leak, so shut the water valve until the technician comes.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Water leaks straight from the bottom of the freezer
  • You emptied the drain pan and the problem continues
  • Ice is building up at the bottom of the freezer
  • The ice maker is leaking

Refrigerator making loud noise

Medium Is your fridge clicking, buzzing or grinding? Each sound points to a different part — the compressor, a fan or the evaporator.

A healthy fridge hums quietly, and gurgling from refrigerant in the pipes or light crackling during defrost is normal. Loud repeated clicking, loud buzzing, grinding or whistling means a fault, and each sound points to a different part.

Symptoms

  • Loud clicking every couple of minutes while the compressor fails to start
  • A loud, constant buzz or hum
  • Grinding from behind the fridge
  • Whistling from inside the freezer
  • The fridge shakes or moves

Likely causes

  1. The compressor tries to start but the start relay or start capacitor has failed
  2. A dusty or worn condenser fan (on models that have one)
  3. The evaporator fan in the freezer is rubbing on ice or has failed
  4. Whistling from the freezer fan or from air getting in past the door gasket
  5. An ageing compressor that has become louder
  6. The fridge is not level

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Find where the sound comes from Listen carefully to tell where the sound comes from — the compressor at the bottom back, a fan, or inside the freezer. Keep your hands away from the fans and do not touch the compressor.
  2. Level the fridge Put a spirit level on top and adjust the front feet until the bubble is centred.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The noise started suddenly and keeps going
  • Loud clicking = usually the start relay
  • Metallic grinding = usually worn fan bearings
  • A smell of hot plastic

Freezer not freezing

Medium Freezer not freezing or making ice? The usual causes are the evaporator fan, the defrost heater or low refrigerant.

If the freezer is not freezing but the fridge section works, the cause is usually the freezer's evaporator fan or the defrost heater. If neither section is cooling, it is usually the compressor or low refrigerant.

Symptoms

  • Frozen food is going soft
  • No ice in the ice maker
  • Thick ice on the back wall of the freezer only
  • The fridge works normally but the freezer is only cool, not freezing
  • The freezer walls are not cold inside

Likely causes

  1. A failed evaporator fan in the freezer
  2. A burnt-out defrost heater, so ice builds up and blocks the airflow
  3. A dust-clogged condenser
  4. Low refrigerant from a leak
  5. A failed defrost (bi-metal) sensor
  6. A weak compressor

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Do a full defrost Take the food out, unplug the fridge and leave the door open until the ice melts on its own (it can take a full day), with towels under the freezer. Never chip the ice with a knife or screwdriver — you can puncture the evaporator, and the refrigerant in modern fridges (R600a) is flammable. If freezing returns after the restart and then the ice builds up again, the defrost heater has probably failed.
  2. Clean the condenser Unplug the fridge and clean the dust off the condenser coil. Do it at least once a year.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Ice builds up again after defrosting
  • Oily residue on the pipes = a possible refrigerant leak (air the room and keep flames away)
  • The compressor keeps switching on and off quickly
  • Ice has completely blocked the freezer vents

Refrigerator compressor issues

Technician Compressor clicking but not starting? Usually the start relay or the start capacitor — and when the compressor itself needs replacing.

The compressor is the heart of the fridge; if it stops, the fridge stops cooling. The usual faults are a burnt start relay, a failed start capacitor, or a compressor at the end of its life. Diagnosis is a technician's job, and sometimes replacing the relay is enough without changing the compressor.

Symptoms

  • The compressor clicks but does not start
  • The compressor runs unusually hot (do not touch it)
  • It runs for a few minutes, then cuts out (short cycling)
  • A loud, abnormal compressor noise
  • The light works but the compressor never starts

Likely causes

  1. A burnt start relay, so the compressor cannot start
  2. A failed start capacitor
  3. A compressor at the end of its life
  4. Burnt internal compressor windings
  5. An overload protector that keeps tripping
  6. Voltage swings or power returning suddenly damaged the compressor

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Unplug for 30 minutes The overload protector needs time to cool down. Unplug the fridge for 30 minutes, then switch it on once. Do not keep switching it off and on — that damages the compressor. If it does not start, call a technician.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The compressor is running unusually hot
  • A burning plastic smell
  • The breaker trips
  • Loud clicking every minute
  • The unit is over 10 years old

Ice buildup on freezer walls

Medium In a no-frost fridge, ice should not build up. The most common cause is a burnt-out defrost heater — the fix and how to prevent it.

In a no-frost fridge, the defrost heater automatically melts the ice off the evaporator at intervals. If ice is building up, the heater has usually failed or the defrost (bi-metal) sensor is faulty. Act before the ice blocks the air vents completely.

Symptoms

  • Heavy ice on the back wall of the freezer
  • Only weak cold air reaches the fridge section from the freezer vents
  • Frozen food is covered in a layer of ice
  • Water leaks from the freezer into the fridge when the ice partly melts
  • Higher electricity use

Likely causes

  1. A burnt-out defrost heater
  2. A failed defrost (bi-metal) sensor
  3. A faulty defrost timer (older models)
  4. A worn freezer door gasket
  5. Opening the door often lets in a lot of moisture
  6. A fault in the defrost circuit on the control board (PCB)

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Full manual defrost Take out all the food, unplug the fridge and leave the door open for 12-24 hours until the ice melts by itself, with towels under the freezer. Never use a knife, screwdriver or anything sharp to break the ice, and no hair dryer or flame — you can puncture the evaporator, and R600a refrigerant is flammable.
  2. Check the door gasket A worn gasket lets warm air in, and it turns to ice. Test it with a sheet of paper.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The ice comes back after a full defrost
  • There is an abnormal noise along with the ice build-up
  • The problem started after a long power cut

Bad smell from refrigerator

Simple Musty or fishy smell in the fridge? A thorough clean and a new carbon filter (if fitted) solve most cases.

Most bad fridge smells come from old food or liquids spilled into the drain pan or the crisper drawers. A thorough clean, then leaving the door open for an hour, usually solves it.

Symptoms

  • A musty smell when you open the door
  • Food picks up the smell (butter, cheese)
  • A bad smell from the crisper drawer
  • An old fish or meat smell
  • The smell comes back after cleaning

Likely causes

  1. Old or spoiled food that needs throwing out
  2. Spilled liquid in the drain pan that was never cleaned
  3. A used-up carbon (active charcoal) filter, on some modern models
  4. Bacteria in the drain channel under the freezer
  5. A dirty door gasket with mould on it
  6. A blocked defrost drain holding stagnant water

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Deep clean Unplug the fridge, empty it completely and clean it with warm water and baking soda (about 4 tablespoons per litre). Wipe all the shelves, walls and the door gasket.
  2. Clean the drain pan With the fridge unplugged, slide out the drain pan underneath (if it comes out without tools) and clean it with white vinegar. Careful: the compressor next to it can be hot.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The smell persists after a deep clean
  • The smell seems to come from behind the fridge
  • There is a burning electrical smell

Refrigerator door not closing properly

Simple Door staying open or hard to close? Usually a worn gasket or loose hinges — and simple to check.

The fridge door has to seal tightly to keep the cold in. If it stays slightly open or feels stiff, the rubber gasket is usually worn, the hinges need adjusting, or the fridge is tilting forward.

Symptoms

  • The door stays slightly open
  • The door closes with a weak sound
  • A sheet of paper slides out easily from the closed door
  • Ice forming on the door edges
  • The electricity bill has gone up

Likely causes

  1. A worn or cracked door gasket
  2. Loose or bent door hinges
  3. The fridge tilts forward, so the door does not swing shut on its own
  4. Dirt on the gasket stopping it sealing
  5. The gasket magnet has weakened over time

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Clean the gasket Wipe the gasket with a white-vinegar solution — dirt stops it sealing fully.
  2. Adjust the fridge tilt If the door does not swing shut on its own, the fridge is probably tilting forward. Raise the front feet a turn or two so it leans slightly back.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The gasket is physically cracked and needs replacing
  • The hinges are bent
  • The door has dropped out of position

High electricity bill from fridge

Simple Noticed a sudden jump in your electricity bill? The fridge may be the cause. Common reasons and how to check them.

A fridge runs all day, so it can be one of the biggest power users in the home. If your bill jumps suddenly, something may be making it run longer than it should — and the checks are simple.

Symptoms

  • A sudden rise in the electricity bill
  • The compressor runs all the time
  • The back of the fridge is unusually hot
  • Heavy ice build-up in the freezer
  • The door does not seal tightly

Likely causes

  1. A dust-clogged condenser
  2. A worn door gasket
  3. Ice built up in the freezer
  4. An old unit that has lost efficiency
  5. A faulty temperature sensor keeping the compressor on
  6. The temperature set too cold

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Clean the condenser Dust on the condenser makes the compressor run longer and raises consumption. Unplug the fridge and clean it with a soft brush — it takes about 15 minutes.
  2. Adjust the settings 4°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer is enough. Colder settings just waste electricity.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The bill stays high after cleaning and adjusting the settings
  • The compressor never stops
  • The unit is over 12 years old

Ice maker not making ice

Medium Side-by-side ice maker not making ice? Usually the water inlet valve, the water filter or the motor.

An ice maker has a water inlet valve, a small motor, a mould heater that releases the ice, and sensors. If it is not making ice, first check the water supply, the filter and the on/off switch.

Symptoms

  • No ice in the bin
  • Ice forms but the cubes are small
  • Water leaking from the ice maker
  • The ice maker makes noise but produces no ice
  • The ice tastes odd

Likely causes

  1. A burnt-out water inlet valve
  2. A clogged internal water filter that needs replacing
  3. The ice maker switch is set to Off
  4. A failed ice-maker motor
  5. A faulty bi-metal (temperature) sensor in the ice maker
  6. A cracked or kinked water line

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check the switch is On Many models have an Auto/Off switch for the ice maker. Make sure it is on.
  2. Replace the water filter The water filter is usually changed about every 6 months (check your fridge manual). If it is overdue, it may be clogged and blocking the water.

When to stop and call a technician

  • You replaced the filter and switched it on, but there is still no ice
  • Water is leaking from the back of the fridge
  • The ice maker clicks but makes no ice

Refrigerator control board failure

Technician Fridge display dark or buttons not responding? The main control board (PCB) usually needs repair or replacement.

In a modern fridge the control board runs everything — cooling, defrost and the ice maker. When it fails, the symptoms are varied and erratic, and repairing it is precise technician work.

Symptoms

  • The display does not light up
  • The buttons do not respond
  • It runs but ignores every setting
  • Temperatures change on their own
  • Several error codes appear
  • The unit switches itself off and on

Likely causes

  1. Voltage swings burnt components on the board
  2. Moisture reached the board
  3. A burnt capacitor on the board
  4. Corroded board tracks
  5. The board has reached the end of its life
  6. Frequent sudden power cuts

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Unplug for 30 minutes Unplug the fridge for 30 minutes. Sometimes the board recovers after a full power-off.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Unplugging and restarting did not help
  • A burning electrical smell
  • The unit is over 8 years old
  • Several sudden changes in how it behaves

Refrigerator not starting at all

Medium Fridge completely dead, with no light or sound? Check 4 simple things before you call a technician.

If the fridge is completely unresponsive — no interior light, no compressor sound — the problem is often the power supply, and many cases are solved by checking the breaker and the socket.

Symptoms

  • The unit is completely dead
  • The interior light does not come on
  • No compressor sound at all
  • The electronic display is dark

Likely causes

  1. The fridge's circuit breaker has tripped
  2. The plug is not pushed in properly
  3. A faulty wall socket
  4. A blown internal fuse
  5. A burnt main control board (PCB)
  6. A damaged power cable

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check the breaker At the electrical panel, find the fridge's breaker. If it has tripped, push it fully down and then back up — once only, with dry hands. If it trips again straight away, leave it off, unplug the fridge and call a technician.
  2. Try another socket Unplug it and try another socket that you know works (test it with another appliance first). If the fridge starts, the original socket is faulty.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The breaker trips again straight away
  • A burning smell
  • The fridge stays dead on a working socket

Refrigerator warm inside

Medium Fridge above 8°C instead of 4°C? It is the settings, the load, or a cooling fault.

If the inside of the fridge is warm, the food is at risk. The cause may be the settings, a large load of food added at once, or a real cooling fault.

Symptoms

  • Food is warm even though the fridge is running
  • Milk goes off quickly
  • Condensation on the food
  • The inside of the door feels warm

Likely causes

  1. The setting is too warm (8°C or more)
  2. A lot of hot food was put in at once
  3. The door was left open for a long time
  4. A worn door gasket
  5. A dust-clogged condenser
  6. Low refrigerant
  7. A weak compressor

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Adjust the settings Set the fridge to 4°C and the freezer to -18°C. On older models, set the thermostat to the middle.
  2. Wait 24 hours If you added hot food or the door was open for a long time, the fridge can take up to 24 hours to get back to its normal temperature.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The settings are right but the problem continues after 24 hours
  • The compressor is not running
  • A strange noise from the unit

Breaker trips when fridge starts

Technician Breaker trips every time the compressor tries to start? That is a serious electrical fault in the compressor or the control board.

If the breaker trips every time the fridge starts, there is an electrical leak or a short. Reset the breaker once only — repeated resets can overheat the wiring and damage the compressor. If it trips again, unplug the fridge and call a technician.

Symptoms

  • The breaker trips within seconds of the compressor starting
  • A hot smell or discolouration at the breaker
  • The whole flat loses power
  • A burning plastic smell
  • The compressor clicks

Likely causes

  1. The compressor has an earth fault (shorting to the casing)
  2. Burnt internal compressor windings
  3. A burnt start relay causing a short
  4. A burnt control board (PCB)
  5. A power cable damaged by rodents
  6. The breaker itself is old or weak

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Don't reset more than once Reset the breaker once only. If it trips again, unplug the fridge and do not try again — call a technician. If there is a hot smell or discolouration at the breaker, do not touch it — call an electrician.
  2. Unplug the fridge With the breaker off and dry hands, pull out the plug. This prevents any further short circuit.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The breaker trips again after one reset
  • A burning smell
  • The compressor is running unusually hot

Frequently Asked Questions

10 questions that come to mind before requesting refrigerator service.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

The cost is determined after the technical inspection. The technician arrives, inspects, and gives you a written price before any work starts — no surprises on the invoice.

What is the response time?

Visits run daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, at the earliest available slot for your area. Call 16062 (the line answers around the clock) and we will book your visit.

Do you service every refrigerator brand?

Yes — we repair fridges from the brands common in Egypt: Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Sharp, Kiriazi, Beko, Fresh, Indesit, White Whale, Haier, Hisense, Bosch and others. If your fridge is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact them first.

Do you recharge refrigerant?

Yes — we recharge with the refrigerant on the fridge's rating label: R-600a on most modern fridges and R-134a on older ones, always after finding and fixing the leak, because refrigerant does not get used up on its own. R-600a is flammable, so if you suspect a leak, air the room and keep flames away.

Is there a warranty on the service?

Yes — a 6-month written warranty on the repair and the replaced part, with a formal invoice. If the same fault returns within that period, we fix it free of charge.

My fridge cools, but only weakly — what's the cause?

Usually a dust-clogged condenser or a stopped freezer fan. Sometimes a small refrigerant leak. A technical inspection determines the exact cause. You can see the causes and safe checks in the "fridge not cooling" section.

What are the key signs a fridge needs service?

Weak cooling, over-freezing, water leaks, loud compressor noise, bad smells, a sudden electricity bill spike, or clicking sounds from behind the unit.

The power cuts out a lot — how do I protect the fridge?

Fit a fridge voltage protector that delays start-up for a few minutes after the power returns — it protects the compressor and the control board from voltage swings and from restarting the instant the power comes back. During a cut, open the door as little as possible to keep the cold in. If the fridge does not start when the power returns, or the breaker trips, unplug it and call a technician.

Do you install large Side-by-Side fridges?

Yes — installation and hookup for Side-by-Side and French Door units, including the water line for the ice maker and internal water filter. See also side-by-side fridge repair.

No-Frost vs. Defrost — what's the difference?

A No-Frost fridge melts the ice automatically with a dedicated heater, so no ice builds up on the walls. A Defrost fridge needs manual defrosting from time to time. No-Frost is newer and more convenient to use, but pricier to service and usually uses a little more electricity. For details, see No-Frost fridge repair.
