Common Hood Faults & Fixes

For each fault: the symptoms, likely causes, safe checks you can do yourself, and when to call a technician.

Weak suction

Simple Hood not clearing smoke and smells? Usually grease-clogged filters, a blocked duct or a weak motor.

If your hood has lost suction after a year or two of use, the most common cause is aluminum grease filters clogged with grease, which block the airflow. Next come a spent carbon filter (on recirculating hoods with no outside vent) or a blocked exhaust duct. Often a thorough clean is all it takes.

Symptoms

  • Cooking smells linger after cooking
  • Smoke is not cleared quickly
  • The hood is loud but pulls little air
  • You feel little pull when you hold your hand under the filters on top speed
  • Steam builds up in the kitchen
  • The hood has to run long after cooking
  • The kitchen stays hot after cooking

Likely causes

  1. Aluminum filters clogged with grease (the most common cause)
  2. A spent carbon filter (on hoods with no outside vent)
  3. A blocked exhaust duct or outside vent
  4. A weak motor capacitor, so the motor turns slowly
  5. A weak or failing motor
  6. Running on low speed while frying
  7. The hood is mounted too high above the hob, or the duct is long with many bends

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Clean the aluminum filters Unplug the hood first. The filters usually unclip from underneath. Soak them for an hour in hot water with dish soap and baking soda, rinse, and let them dry fully before refitting.
  2. Check the exhaust duct Look at the duct behind the hood: is it kinked, crushed or full of bends? If the outside vent is safely within reach from a balcony, clear any nest or leaves — never climb a ladder or lean out of a window; call a technician instead.
  3. Use high speed when frying Switch the hood on a few minutes before cooking and use the highest speed when frying or grilling — low speed cannot keep up with the smoke.

When to stop and call a technician

  • You cleaned the filters and suction is still weak
  • The motor makes an odd noise or smells hot
  • The carbon filter needs replacing and you are not sure which one fits
  • The outside vent is blocked and not safely within reach

Loud noise from hood

Medium Hood grinding, squealing or rattling? Usually worn motor bearings, a bent fan blade or something caught in the fan.

If the hood grinds, squeals or knocks, the problem is usually mechanical. The most common cause is worn motor bearings — grease and heavy use wear them out — followed by a fan blade bent by a knock or something caught in it. The fix usually needs a technician to remove the motor and clean or replace it.

Symptoms

  • A constant grinding sound
  • A loud vibrating noise
  • Clicking or knocking from the fan
  • A high squeal when the motor starts
  • A metallic scraping sound
  • The noise gets louder at higher speeds
  • The motor itself shakes
  • The noise appeared suddenly

Likely causes

  1. Worn motor bearings (the most common cause)
  2. A fan blade bent by a knock
  3. Something caught in the fan housing (paper, an insect)
  4. Grease buildup on the fan blades
  5. A loose motor mount
  6. A weak capacitor making the motor run unevenly
  7. The hood itself is not firmly mounted

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Unplug and look at the fan Unplug the hood or switch it off at the breaker, then remove the aluminum filters. If you can see something caught in the fan (paper, an insect), pull it out by hand with the power off — do not poke in metal tools.
  2. Check the mounting For a wall or under-cabinet hood: switch off the power and tighten the visible screws. For an island hood hung from the ceiling that seems to move: stop using it and call a technician.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The noise comes from the motor itself (bearings)
  • A fan blade is bent
  • The noise is still there after cleaning
  • The hood shakes hard

Hood motor not working

Technician Lights on but the fan will not spin? Usually the motor capacitor, a burnt-out motor or the speed switch.

If the hood is switched on and the lights work but the fan will not spin, power is reaching the hood and the fault is in the motor or what drives it: a burnt-out motor, a failed capacitor, or the speed switch or control board. The technician pins it down with a multimeter before replacing anything.

Symptoms

  • The fan does not spin at all
  • A hum but no rotation
  • The motor starts then stops at once
  • One speed works and another does not
  • The fan turns much more weakly than before
  • An electrical burning smell
  • The breaker trips when you switch the hood on

Likely causes

  1. A burnt-out motor (more likely after years of heavy use)
  2. A failed capacitor, so the motor cannot start
  3. A faulty speed switch or touch panel
  4. A loose internal wire
  5. Wiring damaged by grease
  6. A blown internal fuse
  7. Seized bearings stopping the fan from turning

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check the basics Check the plug and socket, and try every speed. If the lights work but the fan does not, power is reaching the hood and the fault is in the motor or its controls.
  2. Power it off and on Unplug the hood for 5 minutes, then plug it back in — on hoods with an electronic control board this sometimes clears a freeze. If you smell burning, do not try again.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Any fault in the motor itself
  • The breaker trips
  • You smell burning
  • The motor hums but does not turn

Very dirty filters

Simple Hood filters clogged with grease? Regular cleaning restores suction and reduces the risk of a grease fire.

Grease-laden aluminum filters do more than weaken suction — that grease can catch fire from the burner flames. Clean them every 2–4 weeks depending on how much you cook, always with the hood unplugged. If the grease has hardened and will not come off, a technician can deep-clean them or replace damaged filters.

Symptoms

  • The aluminum filter is dark and coated in grease
  • The filter feels heavy and sticky
  • Weak suction even with the hood running
  • The filters drip grease
  • A stale grease smell from the hood
  • The filter is hard to remove

Likely causes

  1. Filters not cleaned for a long time
  2. Lots of frying and grilling
  3. Running the hood without filters (rare but dangerous)
  4. Old, damaged filters
  5. Oily cleaners that leave a film instead of cleaning

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Soak in hot water Unplug the hood and take out the filters. Fill the sink with very hot water, a cup of dish soap and half a cup of baking soda, and soak the filters for 30–60 minutes.
  2. Scrub with a brush Scrub the filters with a soft brush in circles — the grease lifts easily after soaking. Avoid steel wool, which scratches the aluminum.
  3. Rinse and dry Rinse the filters in clean water and let them dry completely before refitting them.
  4. Dishwasher If the manual says the filter is dishwasher-safe, wash it on its own on a normal program. Aluminum may darken slightly; that does not affect how it works.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The grease has hardened and the filters will not come clean
  • There is grease inside the fan and motor housing
  • The carbon filter needs replacing

Hood lights not working

Simple Hood lights (LED or halogen) out? A single dead bulb is an easy swap; if they are all out, it is usually the light driver or transformer.

Hood lights come in two kinds: halogen (older, usually 2–3 bulbs) and LED (newer, longer-lasting). If only one light is out, it is usually the bulb itself. If they all went out together, it is usually the LED driver, the halogen transformer or the light switch.

Symptoms

  • Only one light is out
  • All the lights went out together
  • The lights switch on and off by themselves
  • Dim lighting
  • The LEDs flicker
  • The lights go off after a few seconds
  • The touch panel beeps when you press the light button but nothing lights up

Likely causes

  1. A blown bulb (the most common with halogen)
  2. A failed LED driver, if all the LEDs are out
  3. A failed halogen transformer
  4. A faulty light switch
  5. Damaged wiring
  6. Grease or corrosion in the bulb holder

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Replace the bulb Switch off the power and let the bulb cool for a few minutes (halogen gets very hot), then remove the glass cover if there is one, take out the old bulb and fit one with the same voltage and wattage. Do not touch a new halogen bulb with bare fingers — skin oil shortens its life.
  2. Check the bulb type Make sure the new bulb has the same type and base (G4, G9, E14 or GU10, depending on the model) — never fit the wrong type or a higher wattage.

When to stop and call a technician

  • All the lights are out
  • The LED driver needs replacing
  • The light switch is faulty

Touch panel not responding

Medium Hood touch controls not responding or acting on their own? Usually steam, moisture or grease on the panel, sometimes a faulty panel.

Newer hoods have touch controls instead of buttons. If they stop responding, the cause is usually cooking steam, moisture or grease on the surface; sometimes the panel itself has failed with age or after a power surge.

Symptoms

  • The touch buttons do not respond
  • Buttons trigger by themselves
  • The speed changes on its own
  • The display shows odd symbols or codes
  • The light button on the panel does not work
  • Continuous beeping with no response
  • The buttons are over-sensitive or sluggish

Likely causes

  1. Moisture and steam on the panel (the most common cause)
  2. Grease buildup on the panel
  3. A touch panel worn out with age
  4. A failed touch sensor
  5. A control board fault
  6. A loose wire
  7. A power surge that damaged the panel

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Dry the panel Wipe the touch panel with a dry cloth and leave it off for an hour — steam and moisture are a common reason it stops responding.
  2. Clean the panel Clean it with a microfiber cloth and a mild glass cleaner (not an oily kitchen cleaner) — grease stops the sensor detecting your touch. Spray the cleaner onto the cloth, not onto the panel.
  3. Reset the power Unplug the hood for 10 minutes, then plug it back in — this can clear a frozen control board.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The panel still fails after cleaning and a power reset
  • The panel is completely dead
  • A fault code stays on the display

Remote control not working

Simple Island or smart hood remote not responding? Usually the batteries, or the receiver in the hood.

Island hoods and some smart models come with a remote, which helps when the hood is mounted high. If the remote stops working, the most common cause is weak batteries, followed by a faulty receiver in the hood.

Symptoms

  • The remote does not respond at all
  • It only works from close up
  • Some buttons work and others do not
  • The indicator light on the remote does not come on (if it has one)
  • The hood works from its panel but not from the remote
  • Pairing the remote with the hood fails

Likely causes

  1. Weak batteries (the most common cause)
  2. A faulty receiver in the hood
  3. The remote has lost its pairing
  4. The remote was damaged in a fall
  5. Grease covering the infrared sensor on the hood
  6. Interference from nearby devices

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Fresh batteries Fit new batteries of the same size and check the + and − direction.
  2. Test the remote with a phone camera For an infrared (IR) remote: open your phone camera (the front one usually shows it best), point the remote at it and press a button. If you see a light flash at the tip, the remote works and the problem is in the hood. RF or Bluetooth remotes will not show up this way.
  3. Re-pair the remote The pairing steps differ by model — follow the instructions in your hood manual.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The remote works (you saw the light on camera) but the hood does not respond
  • Pairing keeps failing
  • The receiver in the hood needs replacing

Grease dripping from hood

Medium Grease dripping from the hood onto the hob? Usually saturated filters or a full grease channel — clean them promptly, because grease can catch fire.

If grease is dripping from the hood, the aluminum filters are usually saturated and cannot hold any more. Clean them promptly and replace damaged ones — grease collecting inside the hood and duct can catch fire from the burner flames.

Symptoms

  • Grease dripping onto the hob
  • Grease spots on the floor under the hood
  • The filters drip grease
  • A strong stale-grease smell
  • The grease channel (on some models) is full
  • The underside of the hood is coated in grease

Likely causes

  1. Grease-saturated aluminum filters
  2. Cleaning put off for a long time
  3. A full grease channel in the hood that needs emptying
  4. Grease built up inside the fan and motor housing
  5. The hood is mounted at a tilt, so grease collects on one side
  6. Lots of frying and grilling without regular cleaning

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Clean the filters straight away Unplug the hood, take out the filters and clean them by soaking and scrubbing (as in the dirty-filters fault). If the filters are old and worn, replace them.
  2. Empty the grease channel If the hood has a grease channel or cup under the filters, empty it and wash it with hot soapy water.
  3. Clean the hood body Unplug the hood first, then clean the body inside and out with a degreaser — without spraying water or cleaner onto the lights or the control panel.

When to stop and call a technician

  • There is grease inside the fan and motor housing
  • The hood needs taking apart to be cleaned
  • The filters are damaged and need replacing
  • The hood is mounted at a tilt

Hood vibrating

Medium Hood shaking hard while running? Usually a loose mounting, or fan blades thrown off balance by grease or a knock.

If the hood shakes hard, especially at high speed, the cause is usually a loose wall or ceiling mounting or unbalanced fan blades. A wall hood is often easy to re-tighten; but if a ceiling-hung island hood is moving, stop using it and call a technician — it is heavy and could fall.

Symptoms

  • The hood body visibly shakes
  • A loud buzz with the shaking
  • The shaking gets worse at higher speeds
  • The chimney cover (if any) shakes too
  • The mounting screws have worked loose
  • A metallic scraping sound

Likely causes

  1. A loose wall or ceiling mounting (the most common cause)
  2. Unbalanced fan blades (grease or a knock)
  3. A loose motor mount
  4. A weak capacitor making the motor run unevenly
  5. The hood is not level
  6. A filter that is not seated properly and rattles with the fan

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check the mounting Wall or under-cabinet hood: switch off the power and tighten the visible screws. Ceiling-hung island hood that seems to move: stop using it and call a technician straight away — do not climb a ladder to tighten it yourself.
  2. Check the filters Make sure the filters are properly seated and latched — a loose filter rattles and makes noise.
  3. Clean the fan blades If you can reach the fan easily once the filters are out and the hood is unplugged, clean the grease off the blades — uneven grease throws them off balance.

When to stop and call a technician

  • Tightening the screws did not help, or the island hood moves on its ceiling mount
  • The fan blades need checking or replacing
  • The capacitor needs replacing

Hood not turning on at all

Technician Hood completely dead — no lights, no fan? Check the breaker and socket; the rest (cable, fuse, control board) is a job for a technician.

If the hood shows no sign of life (no fan, no lights, a dark panel), power is not reaching it. Start with the breaker and the socket; if both are fine, the fault is usually the power cable, an internal fuse or the control board — work for a technician.

Symptoms

  • No response when you press power
  • The panel is completely dark
  • No lights and no fan
  • The breaker has tripped
  • You heard a pop before the hood died
  • An electrical burning smell

Likely causes

  1. A tripped breaker
  2. A damaged power cable
  3. A blown internal fuse
  4. A burnt-out control board
  5. A faulty socket
  6. A strong power surge that damaged parts
  7. Worn internal wiring

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check the breaker If the kitchen breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and unplug the hood — there is a short circuit and it needs a technician. If you smell burning, do not switch it on at all.
  2. Check the socket Plug a small appliance (a lamp or charger) into the same socket. If it works, the socket is fine and the fault is in the hood.

When to stop and call a technician

  • You checked the breaker and socket and it is still dead
  • The breaker keeps tripping
  • You smell burning
  • You saw sparks when switching on

Carbon filter expired

Simple Smells lingering even though the hood pulls well? On hoods with no outside vent, the carbon filter is usually spent.

An active carbon filter is fitted to hoods that recirculate air back into the kitchen (with no duct to the outside), and its job is to absorb smells. It usually needs replacing every 3–6 months, depending on use or the manual. If smells linger even though suction is good, the filter is probably spent.

Symptoms

  • Smells linger after cooking
  • The hood clears smoke but not smells
  • The filter has been in longer than the manual recommends
  • A stale smoke smell from the hood
  • Suction is fine but the smells stay

Likely causes

  1. The carbon filter is past its life
  2. Heavy cooking has shortened its life
  3. The filter got soaked by water or heavy steam and stopped working
  4. A filter that does not fit the model or is poor quality
  5. The filter has not been changed for a long time

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Check your hood type Check whether your hood recirculates air into the kitchen (it needs a carbon filter) or is ducted to the outside (it usually does not).
  2. Check the filter Unplug the hood and take out the aluminum filters — the carbon filter is usually behind or above them. Carbon filters are black when new, so the color tells you nothing; go by the interval in your manual, or replace it when smells linger even though suction is fine.
  3. Replace it Order a carbon filter that fits your model (the part number is in the manual), original or compatible. Changing it is usually simple. Most carbon filters cannot be washed — unless your manual says it is a regenerable long-life filter.

When to stop and call a technician

  • You are not sure which filter fits
  • You want to convert the hood from ducted to recirculating (or the reverse)

Exhaust vent blocked

Medium Hood running but smoke not getting outside? Usually a grease-clogged duct, or a nest or dust blocking the outside vent.

On hoods that vent outside, a duct carries the smoke from the hood to an opening in the wall. Over time grease builds up inside it, birds or insects may nest in the outside vent, and in dusty areas the vent clogs faster. Have it checked and cleaned at least once a year.

Symptoms

  • The hood runs but the smoke does not get out
  • The motor sounds loud because the air is trapped
  • The duct gets unusually hot
  • Smells or outside air come back in through the hood
  • A stale smoke smell from the hood
  • The outside vent is covered in grease or soot

Likely causes

  1. Grease built up inside the duct
  2. Birds or insects nesting in the outside vent
  3. The duct is badly fitted (kinked or crushed)
  4. A blocked or damaged mesh on the outside vent
  5. A duct that is too long or has too many bends
  6. A stuck or broken back-draft damper

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Look at the outside vent If the outside vent is safely within reach from a balcony, clear any nest, leaves or grease. If it is not, never climb a ladder or lean out of a window — call a technician instead.
  2. Inspect the duct Unplug the hood and look at the duct behind it: straighten it if it is kinked or crushed. If it comes off easily, clean the inside with a long brush.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The duct needs taking down completely
  • The outside vent needs a new mesh or is out of safe reach
  • The back-draft damper is broken and needs replacing

Hood speed stuck

Medium Hood stuck on one speed? Usually the speed switch, the control board or a motor winding.

Most hoods have three or more speeds. If yours is stuck on one, the usual cause is the speed switch (on button models) or the control board (on touch models), and sometimes a loose wire or a failed motor winding.

Symptoms

  • The hood runs on one speed only
  • Changing the speed does nothing
  • Medium speed does not work
  • High speed does not work
  • The hood switches off instead of changing speed
  • The speed starts normally then drops on its own

Likely causes

  1. A faulty speed switch
  2. A weak or failed motor capacitor
  3. A faulty touch panel (touch models)
  4. A loose wire between the switch and the motor
  5. A faulty control board
  6. A failed motor winding, so it runs on one speed only

Safe checks before you call a technician

  1. Try every speed Try each speed in turn and note exactly which ones work and which do not — it saves the technician time diagnosing.
  2. Power reset If the hood has an electronic control board, unplug it for 5 minutes and plug it back in — sometimes the board regains control of the speeds.

When to stop and call a technician

  • The speed is still stuck after the power reset
  • Certain speeds do not work
  • The speed switch needs replacing
  • The capacitor has failed
