Bosch washing machines repair
Book a technicianMost Bosch washers in Egyptian homes are Series 4 front-loaders such as the WGA244ZREG, 9 kg with a 1400 rpm spin. They show a code for almost every problem, and the most frequent ones, E17 and E18, are usually about water supply or draining rather than the board.
Before you book a technician for the washer
The code on the display starts with E or F depending on the model, and the meaning is the same: E18 equals F18. Photograph it, note the stage where the washer stopped, and photograph the rating label on the inner rim of the door.
A tap symbol on the display means water is not coming in, and a key symbol means the child lock is on; neither is a fault. The drain pump filter is behind the service flap at the bottom front, and many models have a small emergency hose beside it to empty the water before opening the filter.
Before opening the pump filter, unplug the washer, let the water cool if it was a hot programme, and place a shallow container and a towel. All the water in the drum drains through that opening.

Common washer faults6
The washer does not fill (E17 or the tap symbol)
EasyThe programme starts but water does not enter or trickles in, and the washer stops after a while.
Possible causes
- The tap is closed or the water pressure is low
- The inlet hose is kinked
- The mesh at the hose connection is blocked by sand or scale
- The water inlet valve
Solution: Open the tap fully and straighten the hose. With the tap closed and the washer unplugged, undo the hose at the back and clean the mesh. If pressure is good and water still does not enter, the valve needs checking.
Water left in the drum (E18)
EasyThe washer stops before spinning with water inside, because the allowed drain time has passed.
Possible causes
- The drain pump filter is blocked by coins, buttons or lint
- The drain hose is kinked or blocked
- The wall drain pipe is blocked
- The drain pump
Solution: Drain the water through the small hose, then unscrew and clean the filter, and check that the impeller behind it turns freely. If the filter and hose are clear and the code returns, the pump needs checking.
Water in the base of the washer (E23)
Needs a technicianAquaStop has triggered because it detected water in the base, and the washer drains without continuing.
Possible causes
- A leak from an internal hose or seal
- A leak at the pump or the tub
- Excess foam from unsuitable detergent spilling down
Solution: Turn off the tap, unplug the washer and do not run it until the cause is found. If you used too much detergent, foam may be the cause; otherwise the leak cannot be fixed without opening the washer, and the technician locates and repairs it.
Door open or not locking (E16)
ModerateThe washer treats the door as open even when closed, and the programme will not start.
Possible causes
- Clothes caught between the door and the seal
- The door catch or hinge
- The electric door lock
Solution: Clear any clothes from the seal and close the door until it clicks. If the code stays, the lock or catch needs checking.
Shaking or loud noise during spin
ModerateThe washer moves during spin, or makes a constant roar even with an empty drum.
Possible causes
- An uneven load or a single heavy item
- Unlevelled feet
- Transit bolts on a new washer
- Shock absorbers or drum bearings
Solution: Spread the load and level the feet. A constant roar points to the bearings, and replacing them means taking the drum apart.
Unexpected heating (E20) or water not heating
ModerateThe washer heats on a cold programme, or the water stays cold on hot programmes.
Possible causes
- The heater relay on the board
- The heater or temperature sensor
Solution: For E20 restart the washer; if the code returns, unplug it until it is inspected. Weak heating needs the heater and sensor measured.
Washing machine error codes7
These meanings come from Bosch's official support page. A code may appear as E or F (E18 = F18). Codes not listed here are usually electronic faults that need a technician.
| Code | Meaning | Cause | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|
| E16 / F16 | Door open | Close the door properly; if the code stays, the lock needs checking. | Low |
| E17 / F17 | Filling took longer than allowed | The tap, the hose, or the inlet mesh. | Low |
| E18 / F18 | Draining took longer than allowed | The pump filter, the drain hose, or the pump. | Medium |
| E20 / F20 | Unexpected heating | Restart the washer; if it returns, unplug it and book an inspection. | Critical |
| E23 / F23 | AquaStop triggered: water in the base | An internal leak or excess foam. Turn off the tap and do not run it before an inspection. | Critical |
| E25 / F25 | Turbidity sensor | The sensor that measures how dirty the water is; needs a technician. | Medium |
| E29 | The flow meter detects no incoming water | Open the tap; if the code stays, the flow meter or valve needs checking. | Low |

Habits that reduce washer faults4
Clean the pump filter
MonthlyAbout once a month, and check pockets before washing; coins and buttons are the usual cause of E18.
Run the DrumClean programme
MonthlyOn models that have it, run it with an empty drum to remove detergent residue and scale.
Front-loader detergent in the right amount
WeeklyExcess foam can reach the base and trigger AquaStop, showing E23 without a real leak.
Leave the door and detergent drawer open
DailyAfter the last wash of the day, so moisture escapes and the seal does not smell.
Washer FAQs4
My Bosch washer shows E18. What should I do?
It means draining took too long. Empty the water through the small hose, clean the pump filter, and make sure the drain hose is not kinked. If the code returns with a clean filter, the pump needs checking.
What is the difference between E18 and F18?
No difference in meaning; the letter depends on the washer generation or display, and the number identifies the problem.
E23 appeared. Is there really a leak?
The washer detected water in its base. Sometimes it is excess foam, but usually there is an internal leak. Turn off the tap and do not use it until a technician finds the cause.
The key symbol is on and the buttons do not respond
That is the child lock. It is cancelled by a long press on one or two buttons together depending on the model; the method is printed next to the symbol or in the manual.
