A no-frost fridge uses a fan to spread cold air over every shelf, with a defrost heater that automatically melts the ice off the evaporator every few hours of running. The most common faults: a failed defrost heater (so ice builds up), a faulty defrost (bi-metal) sensor, or a stopped freezer fan. If ice builds up, never chip it with a knife or screwdriver — the evaporator can be punctured, and the refrigerant in most modern fridges (R600a) is flammable.
