Replacing the original defrost heater
The No-Frost refrigerator is the most common in modern Egyptian homes. There is no ice on the walls and no need for manual defrosting, but its maintenance is more complex because it has a defrost heater, fans and multiple sensors. When it breaks down, it needs a technician who specializes in it specifically.
A No-Frost fridge uses a fan-driven cooling system that pushes cold air to every shelf, along with a dedicated defrost heater that melts the ice automatically every 6-8 hours. The most common faults: a failed defrost heater (causing ice buildup), a faulty bi-metal temperature sensor, or the freezer fan stopping. The most common brands in Egypt: Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Kiriazi, Beko, Sharp, Fresh and Indesit.
The most frequent faults we encounter while servicing No-Frost — ranked by occurrence.
A burnt defrost heater causing ice buildup and blocked airflow
A faulty bi-metal sensor that does not melt the ice automatically
A faulty evaporator (freezer) fan
A clogged drain hose sending water back into the freezer
A faulty mechanical defrost timer (older models)
A freezer temperature sensor giving wrong readings
Replacing the original defrost heater
Cleaning and manually defrosting the freezer
Replacing the evaporator fan
Cleaning the internal drain hose
Replacing the bi-metal sensor and thermostat
Repairing or replacing the defrost timer
No-Frost melts the ice automatically (no ice on the walls). Defrost has to be done manually. No-Frost is newer and more expensive to maintain, but more convenient to use.
A faulty defrost heater or a faulty bi-metal sensor. The fix is replacing the part plus manually defrosting the ice once.
The evaporator fan in the freezer is faulty, so the cold air does not reach the upper section.
12-15 years with regular maintenance. The defrost heater is usually replaced every 5-7 years.
Yes — R-134a for older units and R-600a for newer ones. After detecting the leak first.
10-15% more than a Defrost fridge because of the heater. Modern inverter models narrow the gap.
