Kiriazi began making refrigerators in Egypt in 1985 in 10th of Ramadan City, followed by a plant in Obour in 1995. It makes No Frost and defrost fridges, chest and upright freezers, twin-tub and automatic washers, cookers, and gas and electric water heaters.

Kiriazi model codes usually start with letters such as KH, KR or KW, like KH370LN for fridges or KH338CF for freezers. The code is on a label inside or on the back of the fridge, on the back of the washer and on the side of the water heater. Photograph it before you call.

Book a technician

The freezers come as chest models such as the KH338CF, about 338 litres with a digital panel and fast freeze, and upright No Frost drawer models such as the 270-litre KH256VF. Chest models are manual defrost, so ice in them is normal and needs melting from time to time.

Before you book a technician for the freezer

Leave at least about 10 cm between the freezer and the wall on every side, and keep it away from sun and the cooker. In summer, a freezer boxed into a corner keeps running without reaching the set temperature.

On many freezers the condenser sits inside the side walls, so the sides feel warm or hot, which is normal. Check your model's manual; if the sides are hot and freezing is good, there is no problem.

Weak freezing in summer

Moderate

Food is soft and the compressor runs constantly.

Possible causes

  • Poor ventilation around the freezer
  • A lid seal not closing
  • Thick ice in a chest model
  • Low voltage
  • Low refrigerant or the compressor

Solution: Clear space around it, melt thick ice, and test the seal with a sheet of paper. If it is still weak, the technician measures voltage and pressure.

Heavy ice in a chest freezer

Easy

A thick layer of ice on the walls and a lid that is hard to close.

Possible causes

  • Manual defrosting overdue
  • The lid opened often or left ajar
  • The seal

Solution: Switch off, empty it and let the ice melt on its own. Do not chip it with a knife or melt it with a flame or hair dryer: you could pierce the pipes, and in many freezers the gas inside them is flammable.

Ice in an upright No Frost freezer

Moderate

Ice on the wall behind the drawers and freezing getting weaker.

Possible causes

  • The defrost heater or its sensor
  • The freezer fan
  • The door not closing

Solution: Empty it and switch it off for a day with the door open so the ice melts; that restores cooling for a while, and if the ice returns, the defrost circuit needs checking.

The compressor will not start

Moderate

The panel is lit but there is no motor sound, or a click every so often.

Possible causes

  • Low voltage
  • The compressor relay or overload
  • The compressor

Solution: Unplug it for half an hour and run it from its own socket. If it continues, the relay is measured before the compressor.

Monthly

Check it monthly, and defrost once it is thicker than about half a centimetre.

Leave space around it

Especially in summer; the heat from the sides needs somewhere to go.

The fridges include No Frost models such as the 370-litre KH370LN and the 380-litre KH380LNS, defrost models such as the 350-litre KR350/4-9, and the 625-litre digital Premier model. The fridge type decides whether ice inside is normal or a sign of a fault.

Before you book a technician for the fridge

On No Frost models, look at the back wall inside the freezer: if there is ice, the defrost cycle has stopped. On defrost models, ice on the freezer walls is normal and needs melting by switching off from time to time.

After any move, wait four hours before switching on, and leave space behind and above the fridge so the condenser can release heat.

Solution: Switch the fridge off for a day with the doors open. If the problem returns within days, the defrost circuit needs checking.

Water at the bottom of the fridge

Easy

A puddle under the crisper drawer.

Possible causes

  • A blocked defrost drain hole

Solution: Clear the hole with warm water. If it blocks often, the technician looks for the cause.

The whole fridge is not cooling

Moderate

The light works but there is no motor sound, or a click every few minutes.

  • Low voltage
  • The compressor relay
  • The thermostat
  • The compressor

Solution: Try another socket and check the thermostat is not at zero. The technician measures the relay and voltage before the compressor.

Loud noise

Easy

Humming or knocking from the freezer or the back.

  • The fridge not level
  • Pipes at the back touching each other

Solution: Level the feet and move the fridge away from the wall. If the noise comes from the freezer with ice, the problem is defrost.

The heaters include 10-litre gas models such as the Star, including one with a rechargeable ignition, and 45 and 55 litre electric models with an anode rod and safety valve. Gas heater faults mostly come from ignition and water pressure, and electric ones from the thermostat and element.

Gas and electric heater safety

A gas water heater must be in a ventilated place with its flue leading outside. Carbon monoxide has no smell and can kill, so never install a gas heater in a closed bathroom. If you smell gas: close the valve, open the windows, do not switch any electrical switch on or off or use a lighter, leave the place and call the gas emergency line 129.

On an electric heater, switch off the breaker before touching it and never run it empty. If it trips the breaker, leave it off until it is inspected.

The gas heater does not light

Easy

You open the tap and there is no clicking, or clicking without lighting.

Possible causes

  • A flat charger or battery
  • The gas valve or cylinder
  • Low water pressure
  • The ignition electrode or flame sensor

Solution: Charge or replace the ignition power source, and open the gas valve and the tap fully. If water is weak throughout the house, the problem is pressure.

The gas heater goes out during a shower

Moderate

The water heats, then suddenly turns cold.

Possible causes

  • Water pressure dropped
  • The ignition power weakened
  • The flame sensor or gas valve
  • Poor ventilation

Solution: If the heater is in a closed bathroom or the flue is blocked, turn it off, open the windows and do not keep relighting it: the safety cut-out may be shutting it down because the exhaust cannot escape, which means a carbon monoxide risk. Anyone who feels a headache or dizziness should get to fresh air at once. If ventilation is fine, try with the other taps closed and after charging the ignition; if it continues, the sensor and valve need checking.

Lukewarm water from the electric heater

Moderate

The water does not heat as it used to.

  • The thermostat
  • The element or scale on it

Solution: Check the thermostat. If there is no heat, the technician measures the element and thermostat; both can be replaced without changing the tank.

Leak from the valve or under the heater

Water drips all the time.

On a twin-tub, the spinner only turns with its lid closed, and the drain knob must be in the right position. On an automatic, check the tap, the pump filter, and that the drain hose is not kinked.

Solution: Remove the transit bolts and level the feet. If it continues, the shock absorbers need checking.

The cookers include 60 cm 4-burner models such as the 6400 SS and 90 cm 5-burner models such as the Joker Deluxe 9700SM with a fan and full safety. On full-safety models, a flame that dies when you release the knob usually means the knob was released too soon or the thermocouple, not the gas.

If you smell gas

Close the valve or cylinder, open the windows, do not switch any electrical switch on or off or use a lighter, leave the place and call the gas emergency line 129. Do not use the cooker again before the connections are checked.

Automatic ignition, the fan and the oven light run on electricity. If they all stop together, the plug comes first. And say whether the cooker is on a cylinder or mains gas.

The flame dies when you release the knob

Moderate

On full-safety models: it lights while you press and goes out after you let go.

Possible causes

  • Not holding long enough
  • A dirty thermocouple tip or one out of the flame
  • The thermocouple

Solution: Hold for 10 to 15 seconds after lighting, and clean the copper tip. If it still goes out, the thermocouple is replaced.

Ignition not working

Easy

No spark, or clicking without lighting.

Possible causes

  • The cooker is not plugged in
  • A wet spark plug
  • The ignition unit

Solution: Dry the spark plug and try again. If no burner sparks, it is the ignition unit.

Yellow or weak flame

Moderate

A yellow flame that blackens pans, or weak at full.

  • Blocked burner holes
  • Jets not matched to the gas type
  • The cylinder regulator

Solution: Clean the holes. If you switched between cylinder and mains gas, a technician changes the jets.

Oven fan stopped or food cooks on one side

On fan models: the heat is not spread evenly.

    A fan spreads the cold air, and a heater melts ice off the evaporator automatically.

    Common faults

    Its own faults are in the defrost cycle and the fan. To tell whether yours is No Frost: it says so on the label or in the brochure, the freezer has air vents inside, and its walls stay free of ice when it works properly.

  • Fast freeze

    KH338CF and KH256VF freezers

    A mode that keeps the compressor running for a while to freeze new food quickly.

    Common faults

    If the mode is left on, the compressor will not cycle off and the body gets hotter. Turn it off once the food has frozen.

  • Inverter

    The KTW-1212-CS washer

    The motor varies its speed with the load, controlled by a board.

    Common faults

    The board is sensitive to voltage swings, and faults are checked at the board before the motor.
