Replacing the door seal and adjusting the hinges and self-closing mechanism
Upright Freezer Repair
Upright freezer repair: uneven cooling, ice on the evaporator, fan faults, doors that will not self-close and display codes, with a 6-month written warranty. An upright freezer looks like a fridge but only freezes. Shelves and drawers make food easy to organise and reach, and it takes up less floor space than a chest freezer, but more cold air escapes each time you open the door.

Most modern uprights are no-frost: a fan spreads the cold air and an automatic defrost system (heater, defrost thermostat and a timer or control board) keeps the evaporator clear — the details and faults are on the no-frost freezer page. What is specific to uprights: the door, its hinges and self-closing mechanism; drawers and shelves that stop the door closing if they are not pushed fully home; the door switch that stops the fan when the door opens; and where the freezer stands — it must be level, with the front feet adjusted as the manual describes, so the door closes properly.
Signs your Upright Freezer needs service
- Some sections stay cold while others do not (often the fan, or ice on the evaporator)
- Ice builds up even though it is no-frost
- The display shows an error code
- A loud internal fan
- The door no longer swings shut by itself
- The door catches on a drawer or shelf and does not close fully
- The interior light does not come on
- A high electricity bill
- Fast-freeze does not work

Tips to keep your Upright Freezer running
- Set the temperature to -18°C
- Do not leave the door open for long — the cold air spills out from the bottom
- Switch on fast-freeze before adding a large batch of food and let it switch off automatically as your manual describes
- Check the door seal every few months, and make sure drawers and shelves are pushed fully home so the door can close
- Leave space around the freezer for ventilation, and if the condenser is exposed at the back, brush it clean with the plug out
- Do not block the air vents inside the freezer with food
- Leave gaps between bags inside so the air can circulate

Upright Freezer — frequently asked questions
My upright freezer is icing up even though it is no-frost — why?
Usually the automatic defrost system (the heater, the defrost thermostat or the timer/control board) or the door seal. The technician tests these parts before replacing anything and runs a full defrost cycle after the repair. The defrost cycle is explained in detail on the no-frost freezer page.
An error code is showing on the display — what does it mean?
Codes differ by brand and model — the same code can mean a sensor on one model and a defrost fault on another. Send us a photo of the display and your model number (from the rating label) on WhatsApp before the visit.
Do you repair freezers with inverter compressors?
Yes. Some LG models use a linear compressor, Samsung uses its Digital Inverter compressor, and other brands fit inverter compressors on some models. The technician diagnoses the compressor and its control board, and replacements are original or compatible, depending on the model, with a 6-month written warranty.
Is an upright freezer better than a chest freezer?
Each has its advantage: an upright is easier to organise and takes less floor space, but more cold escapes from it and it usually uses slightly more power. A chest freezer holds the cold better and suits large quantities.
My upright freezer door does not close by itself — what should I do?
Make sure the drawers and shelves are pushed fully home and nothing catches on the door, and that the freezer stands level with its front feet adjusted as the manual describes. If it still does not close, the seal, a hinge or the self-closing mechanism needs a technician.
How long does an upright freezer last?
It depends on use, power stability and maintenance. Most faults are in the seal, the fan and the defrost system, and repairing them is usually economical.
