Technician inspecting the top grill element of an oven

The grill is the top part of the oven that gives strong heat from above for browning and grilling. In an electric oven it is a top grill element; in gas ovens it may be a grill burner separate from the oven burner, or an electric element. Its key parts are the element or burner, the thermostat, the grill switch, the cooling fan (on electric models), the heat reflector and the wire rack. The most common jobs are replacing a burnt-out element, cleaning grease off the reflector, replacing the switch and checking the thermostat. Restaurant salamanders and commercial grills are covered on the commercial oven repair page.

Signs your Grill Oven needs service

  • The grill doesn't heat at all
  • The grill heats in some areas but not others
  • Food doesn't brown evenly
  • Crackling or sparks from the grill element when it's switched on
  • A constant burning smell (built-up grease)
  • The grill switches itself off after a few seconds
  • The reflector has turned black from grease
  • The cooling fan is unusually loud

  • Always use a drip tray under the rack to catch the fat
  • Don't let aluminum foil touch the grill element
  • If a gas grill hasn't lit within 10–15 seconds, turn the knob off, open the door and wait a few minutes before trying again
  • Keep the kitchen ventilated while grilling

Grill Oven — frequently asked questions

The grill won't heat — what's the most common cause?

Usually a burnt-out grill element or a faulty grill switch. A technician tests the element with a multimeter after switching off the breaker — don't dismantle the oven yourself. On a gas grill, the burner may be clogged or its thermocouple weak.

Food isn't browning evenly — what's the fix?

Usually the reflector is corroded or blackened, or the element is heating in only one area. A check identifies the cause.

Built-up grease is smoking — what should I do?

Switch the grill off at once (and shut the gas valve on a gas oven), let it cool, then clean the grill area with an oven cleaner. If there are flames, never throw water on them — keep the door closed, and if they don't go out, call the fire brigade on 180.

The grill on my gas oven won't light — what should I do?

With the oven cold and the gas off, check that the grill burner cap is in place and wipe the spark electrode with a dry cloth. If it hasn't lit within 10–15 seconds, turn the knob off, open the oven door and wait a few minutes before trying again. If the problem continues, it's usually the grill's spark electrode or thermocouple — call a technician.

I have a salamander or grill in a restaurant — do you repair those?

Commercial grills and salamanders are covered on the commercial oven repair page. Call us on 16062 and tell us the unit type and model.

How long does a grill last?

A grill element lasts many years if it is cleaned regularly; built-up grease and foil touching it are what shorten its life most. When it burns out, it can be replaced on its own without replacing the oven.
