Gas oven technician inspecting thermocouple, bottom burner and grill

A gas oven has a bottom burner for baking and a top grill for browning. Its key parts are the burners, the automatic ignition (spark electrode), the thermocouple (flame-safety sensor), the safety (magnetic) valve that keeps the gas open only while the thermocouple is hot, the thermostat that controls the temperature, the cooling fan and the door gasket. The most common faults: a weak thermocouple that lets the flame go out, a dirty or damaged spark electrode, burner holes clogged with grease, and a worn door gasket. Any gas work must be done by a specialist technician, who leak-tests the connections with soapy water. Problems with the hob burners or the hose are covered on the gas stove repair page.

Signs your Gas Oven needs service

  • The oven won't light at all even though there's gas
  • The ignition clicks but the burner won't light
  • The flame lights, then goes out after a few seconds (usually the thermocouple)
  • The oven doesn't reach the set temperature
  • The temperature rises and falls instead of holding steady
  • A gas smell when lighting or afterwards — an emergency: shut the valve and call the gas emergency line 129
  • The top grill is weak or not working
  • You have to hold the knob in for a long time to keep the flame lit
  • Food burns on the bottom but stays undercooked on top
  • The oven door doesn't close properly and heat escapes

Common technical faults

Faults we often meet when servicing this type.

  1. 01

A weak or failed thermocouple (the most common fault) — the flame goes out seconds after lighting

  2. 02

A damaged spark electrode or ignition module that doesn't produce a strong enough spark

  3. 03

A weak safety (magnetic) valve — the flame goes out as soon as you release the knob

  4. 04

Burner holes clogged with built-up grease

  5. 05

A faulty oven thermostat that no longer controls the temperature

  6. 06

A temperature sensor (on digital models) giving wrong readings

  7. 07

    A worn oven door gasket

  8. 08

    A faulty gas pressure regulator

  9. 09

A stopped cooling fan, so the oven body overheats

  10. 10

A burnt-out oven lamp (not a serious fault)

Tips to keep your Gas Oven running

  • Clean grease off the burner cap weekly with the oven cold — clogging stops it lighting
  • Inspect the gas hose every year — if it has cracks, replace it immediately
  • Don't light the oven if you smell gas — shut the valve and call the gas emergency line 129
  • The flame should be blue — yellow means incomplete combustion (a carbon monoxide hazard), so have a technician adjust it
  • Keep the kitchen ventilated while the oven is on (a window open or the hood running)
  • Don't line the oven floor with aluminum foil — it blocks the air vents and overheats the floor
  • Clean the inside of the oven every two weeks with an oven cleaner, with the oven cold
  • Check the door gasket every few months — replace it if it's cracked

Gas Oven — frequently asked questions

The oven lights and then goes out — what's the most common cause?

Usually the thermocouple — the safety sensor that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out, so none can leak. When it weakens or gets dirty, the flame dies a few seconds after lighting. Replacing it is a simple job for a technician, using an original or compatible part depending on the model.

The auto-ignition isn't working — what should I do?

With the oven cold and the gas valve closed, wipe the spark electrode (the metal tip next to the burner) with a dry brush or cloth. If you hear clicking but see no spark, the electrode is probably damaged; if there's no clicking at all, check the oven is plugged in — otherwise it's usually the ignition module. Important: if the burner hasn't lit within 10–15 seconds, turn the knob off, open the oven door and wait a few minutes for the gas to clear before trying again.

I smell gas from the oven — what should I do right now?

Shut the gas valve, open the windows, don't switch anything electrical on or off and don't use a lighter, then leave and call the gas emergency line 129 from outside. Once the place has been made safe, call us on 16062 to inspect the oven and its connections.

The oven doesn't heat to the set temperature — why?

Usually the thermostat is faulty or the temperature sensor is giving wrong readings. Sometimes the cause is simpler — a worn door gasket is letting heat escape. A technician pinpoints the cause with a check.

Food burns on the bottom but isn't cooked on top — what's the fix?

Usually the tray is too close to the burner or the heat is too high for the dish. Put the tray on the middle shelf and switch on the top grill for the last 5 minutes only. If the problem continues, the thermostat may need calibrating.

The flame is yellow and leaves soot — is that dangerous?

Yes — a normal flame is blue. A yellow, sooty flame means incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide. Turn the oven off and ventilate the kitchen, and don't poke the burner holes with a needle or wire — have a technician clean and adjust the burner.

Do you install new gas ovens in apartments?

Yes — we install freestanding and built-in gas ovens: connecting the gas with a suitable hose or fitting, leak testing with soapy water, and a test run of the burner, grill and fan. Built-in ovens are fitted into the kitchen cabinet to the dimensions in their manual.

The oven smells faintly of gas only when it lights — is that normal?

A faint smell for a second or two at the moment of ignition can be normal. But if the smell lingers, if you notice it with the oven off, or if the burner is slow to light, shut the valve and open the windows. If the smell is strong or won't go away, get out and call the gas emergency line 129, then call us to inspect the oven.

Are there brands you work on more than others?

We work on all the gas oven brands sold in Egypt: Bosch, Indesit, Zanussi, Kiriazi, Fresh, Universal, White Whale, Beko, Electrolux and others.
