Desert Cooler Part Names — What to Search for When Buying Spares
This appliance is sold as a Desert Cooler or an Evaporative Cooler — and in the US it is called a Swamp Cooler. Knowing the names helps when you look for spare parts or pads online: the pads are called Cooling Pads or Cellulose Pads, the pump is the Water Pump, and the float is the Float Valve.
The Secret to Strong Cooling: The Pads and the Water — Not the Motor
Most "my desert cooler is not cooling" complaints come down to the pads or the water circulation, not the fan. A healthy pad must stay fully and evenly wet the whole time it runs — if some parts are dry, the air passes through them just as hot as it came in.
- Calcified pads (a white crust) = less water absorption = weaker cooling — replace them every two years
- A weak or clogged pump = water not reaching the top of the pad — the most common fault, and the cheapest to fix
- Top distribution holes clogged with limescale = uneven wetting — cleaning them restores cooling immediately

Switch off the power and empty the tank
Any old water left sitting from last season must be drained completely — it is the source of the algae and the smell.

Wash the tank with water and white vinegar
Vinegar breaks down deposits and kills algae without harmful chemicals. Rinse well afterward.

Hold the pads up to the light
If light does not pass through them, or they have a thick white crust of scale, or crumbs fall off them — it is time to replace them, not clean them.

Run the pump and watch the pads get wet
Before switching on the fan, run the pump on its own and check whether the water reaches the full width of the pad. Uneven wetting = clogged distribution holes.

Set the float valve to the right level
The water should stop 3-4 cm below the rim of the tank. A stuck float valve = water overflowing onto the floor, or a pump motor running dry.

Do a full half-hour test run
Fan and pump together. If refreshing cool air comes out across the whole grille, it is ready for the season. If one part blows warm or you hear a strange noise, call us before the peak heat arrives.
Unplug the unit before touching the water or the pads, and do not open the motor housing or the wiring yourself.
