A built-in microwave fitted flush at chest height into light oak kitchen cabinetry, black glass side-opening door, narrow brushed steel trim, compact rectangular proportions with a small simple control panel on the right

A built-in microwave is fitted inside a kitchen cabinet, usually above the oven, with a trim frame that matches the kitchen. Inside it has the same parts as a standard microwave (magnetron, high-voltage transformer, door switches, control board), but it is enclosed in the cabinet, so ventilation and the cooling fan matter a great deal: with poor ventilation, heat builds up, the unit cuts out on its own and the control board suffers. A repair usually means taking the unit out of the cabinet and refitting it to the same sizes. The most common brands: Bosch, Miele, Samsung and AEG.

Signs your Built-in Microwave needs service

  • It cuts out by itself after a few minutes of heating
  • The cooling fan is loud or keeps running much longer than usual
  • The trim or the cabinet around it gets very hot
  • The door rubs on the trim or does not close fully
  • The keys do not respond
  • The unit has come loose or tilts in the cabinet
  • It does not heat even though the turntable turns

Tips to keep your Built-in Microwave running

  • Follow the cut-out and ventilation sizes in your model's installation guide, and keep the trim vents clear
  • Do not block the ventilation openings around the unit
  • If the unit or the cabinet gets very hot on the outside, stop using it and call a technician
  • Do not open the microwave or pull it out of the cabinet yourself — its high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge even after it is unplugged
  • After cooking, let the cooling fan run until it stops on its own
  • Make sure the turntable turns freely inside the unit

Built-in Microwave — frequently asked questions

My built-in microwave gets very hot on the outside — is that dangerous?

Yes — it usually means poor ventilation in the cabinet or a weak cooling fan, and that heat damages the control board. Stop using it, let the fan run until it stops, and call a technician to check the ventilation and the fan.

Is it harder to repair than a regular microwave?

Usually, yes — the unit has to come out of the cabinet so the technician can reach its parts, then be refitted to the same sizes, so the job takes longer than on a freestanding microwave.

Do you fit built-in microwaves into an existing cabinet?

Yes — we check the cut-out and ventilation sizes against the installation guide, fit the unit, connect it and test it.

Do you repair Bosch built-in microwaves?

Yes — we repair built-in microwaves from Bosch, Miele, AEG, Samsung and others, with original or compatible parts depending on the part and model.

What makes a built-in microwave last longer?

Above all, good ventilation in the cabinet; poor ventilation shortens the life of the control board and the magnetron. The actual lifespan depends on the brand and how it is used.

A built-in microwave costs more than a freestanding one — is it worth it?

If you are fitting out a complete kitchen and want a uniform look, yes. If the microwave is only for quick reheating, a freestanding one is cheaper and easier to service.
